Air Fare Surges 66.36% Year-On-Year In February – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes  single journey increases to N74,571.62 in February this year from N44,825.04 paid in the corresponding month of last year, representing 66.36% year-on-year surge.

The Bureau, in its just published ‘Transport Fare Watch for February 2023’, however, noted that specified routes  single journey air fare slightly decreased by 0.18% on a month-on-month basis from N74,702.70 in January this year to N74,571.62 in February.

According to the NBS, the report which covers bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity (state route) charge per person; air fare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and water way passenger transport, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop decreased by 0.47% in February 2023 to N647.66 from N650.70 in January 2023.

The report, however, reflected that on a year-on-year basis, the average fare paid rose by 26.07% from N513.72 in February 2022.

The statistics agency further clarified that in another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop declined to N3,990.70 in February this year, indicating a growth rate of – 0.19% on a month-on-month basis compared to the N3,998.42 in the preceding month while on a year-on-year basis, it rose by 4.02% from N3,836.45 paid by passengers in February last year.

While noting that the average fare paid on Okada transportation is N461.28 in February this year, which is 1.07% lower than the N466.25 rate recorded in January, the Bureau reported that on a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 21.67% when compared with N379.12 paid by passengers in February 2022.

Also, the Transport Fare Watch indicated that the average fare paid for water transport (waterway passenger transportation) in February this year stood at N1,029.47, representing an increase of 12.74% on a year-on-year basis from N913.13 paid by passengers in February 2022.

The statistics agency further reported that on a month-on-month basis, the February water transport fare, however, dropped by 0.33% from N1,032.84 in January this year.
