The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Friday ordered telecom operators to shut down telecommunication services in Zamfara State as joint forces commence a major general operation following the increasingly spiking insecurity casualties in the state.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, gave the directive in a memo titled “Re: Shutdown of All Telecom Sites in Zamfara State” to the Chief Executive Officers of the telcos

The EVC stated that the decision would allow relevant security agencies to carry out required activities to curtail the security challenges.

He clarified: “The pervading security situation in Zamfara State has necessitated an immediate shut down of all telecom services in the state from today, September 3, 2021.”

According to him, all telecom operators are to shut down all sites in Zamfara and any site(s) in neighbouring states that could provide communication service to the state.

Danbatta pointed out that that the order is for two (2) weeks (September 03-17, 2021) in the first instance, stressing that “your urgent action in this regard is required.”
