The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has made some clarifications on the recent challenges faced by subscribers in linking their SIMs with NINs, attributing some of the problems to submission of more than one NIN number by them

The commission’s Director of Compliance, Mr. Efosa Idehen, explained that duplication of NINs by third-party agents involved in the registration process was largely responsible for the disconnection of many subscribers’ phone lines.

According to him, audits of the process showed that there is need for the actual owners of the NINs to reclaim them.

While restating the commitment of the telecom industry regulator to assisting subscribers to reactivate their lines in view of the severity of the problem, the Director underscored the significance of eliminating doubts about the legitimacy of individuals’ claims to ownership when they assert their SIMs.

Idehen maintained that efforts to ensure the accuracy and uniqueness of NINs during the registration process were crucial in mitigating the challenges faced by subscribers and maintaining the integrity of the NIN-SIM linkage initiative.
