Workplace Safety: BPE Prioritizes Fire Fighting Assets For Workers’ Protection

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has demonstrated the priority it places on workers and various stakeholders’ safety in workplace with the acquisition and installation of modern firefighting equipment in its premises.

Speaking on the initiative during the commissioning of the firefighting equipment and the unveiling of the Bureau’s Fire Warden Kits at the Bureau’s headquarters in Abuja by the Comptroller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Mr.  Jaji Abdulganiyu, the Bureau’s Director-General, Mr. Alex Okoh, said the acquisition of the fire equipment was in line with the FFS’ directive and the importance the management placed on workers’ safety.

The BPE Director-General, who was represented at the event by the Director, Industries and Services Sector, Mr. Yunana Mallo, said: “As a reform agency, the Bureau takes the safety of its staff and the various stakeholders seriously, hence the Bureau quickly keyed into the fire safety recommendations by the Federal Fire Services; and also promptly procured all the recommended fire wardens’ kits for the Bureau.”

To ensure an effective, efficient and reliable fire protection strategy, Okoh maintained that priority was also given to adequate fire protection training of some of the staff, known as Fire Wardens, to handle the fire-fighting kits.

In his remarks, the Comptroller General  of the FFS commended the Bureau for the steps taken to protect the lives of its staff and stakeholders through the acquisition of the fire equipment and training of some staff on how to use them,  describing the initiative as exemplary and worthy of emulation by others.

The FFS’ boss, who was represented by an Assistant Comptroller (Fire), Mr. Abraham Paul, stressed that the present leadership of the Service was committed to preventing fire disaster nationwide, adding that doing this is cheaper, safer and easier.

It would be recalled that after successfully meeting the necessary requirements by the Bureau, the FFS commenced the installation of modern fire-fighting equipment in November last year in its premises and completed the work in April this year.
