Cooking Gas Consumers Pay More In May

Consumers of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), also called cooking gas, paid more for the product in May when compared with the selling prices in the preceding month.

Specifically, the average price for the refilling of a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased by +0.68 percent month-on-month and decreased by -15.30 percent year-on-year to N2,072.24 in May 2018 from N2,058.19 in April 2018.

The Liquified Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch Report published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) today showed that consumers in Bauchi, Gombe and Borno states paid more for the commodity than their counterparts in other states.

According to the NBS, consumers in Bauchi and Gombe paid N2,500 for a 5kg cylinder gas while those in Borno paid N2,428.57 for the same size of cooking gas.

However, the report showed that Kaduna consumers who procured the commodity at N1,687.50 per 5kg gas cylinder and those in Ebonyi who paid N1,690 and Ekiti with N1,795 paid the same size of the commodity paid least for it during the month under review.

Similarly, average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder for cooking gas increased by 0.70 percent month-on-month and decreased by -13.30 percent year-on-year to N4298.72 in May up from the N4,268.95 the commodity sold in the preceding month.

The Bureau reported that Benue, Kaduna and Cross River states paid the highest average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder of the commodity in the month under review.

Specifically, Benue consumers bought at N5,150 while their counterparts in Kaduna and Cross River procured the same size of cooking gas at N4,935 and N4,687.50 respectively.

States with the lowest average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder for cooking gas in the month under review were Oyo, where consumers bought the 12.5kg cylinder cooking gas at N3,940.38, Ogun  where it sold at N3,866.67 and Lagos where buyers got it at N3,683.33.
